The AHSI Data work group assists AHSI in communicating with broader audiences about evidence of success among high quality alternative high schools. What results do high quality alternative schools achieve with young people? How are these results measured, and how is progress tracked qualitatively and quantitatively?

The Data work group provides support to each organization for telling its own story using data. Each organization is using data to demonstrate how students progress through each model, and key indicators used to enable students, parents, and schools to know when they have achieved success. In addition, the Data work group is helping the network as a whole tell a story about how high quality alternative high schools are contributing significantly to reducing the nation’s dropout rate, increasing the high school graduation rate, and improving young people’s ability to successfully transition from high school to post-high school success.

We anticipate using two key indicators — high school graduation and post-high school success — to make a case that students who graduate from alternative high schools are overcoming tremendous odds. As a network, AHSI will use these data points to raise awareness and inform public discourse about college preparation and entry requirements, as well as make the case for financial aid and other supports for graduates of our schools who are pursuing post secondary education. AHSI is developing capacity to respond to requests for data which demonstrate evidence that these models are effective.

AHSI is able to measure success based on activities at three levels — AHSI Network projects and events, AHSI Work Group activities, and AHSI Intermediary support. Below is a visual overview of these three levels of AHSI activity. The purpose of this overview is to frame the emerging effort to define AHSI Indicators and Measures. This work builds upon prior AHSI Data & Evaluation strategies and attempts to more concisely focus our efforts on a simple yet compelling set of indicators and measures which document evidence of the AHSI network’s success.
