MINT Support Team Visit
March 25
________________________________________________________________________
On the day of the site visit, MINT support team members met with HRHS staff to review the day’s agenda and get an overview of the lessons that would be conducted during the morning session. Following this initial meeting, MINT support team members working in pairs (with AHSI Math/QR Lead Tim Scheidt floating) sat in on two 50-minute lessons conducted by HRHS math staff. MINT support team members took on an observer role, documenting observations and suggestions on a specially designed recording chart as related to the four key areas of need identified by HRHS staff. This chart was intended for observer use only and was to be referenced during the afternoon debrief with HRHS staff.
Immediately following lunch, MINT support team members Michelle Allman and Nicodemus Ford facilitated a lesson in Rhonda Creed-Harry’s Algebra 3 class designed to address the four key areas of need as well as reflect several of the numeracy principles outlined in the AHSI concept paper, Creating and Sustaining a Culture of Numeracy in Our High Schools.

On the day of the site visit, MINT participants met with HRHS staff to review the day’s agenda and get an overview of the lessons that would be conducted during the day. Following this initial meeting, MINT participants working in heterogeneous groups of four or five (each small group consisting of members from different AHSI intermediary organizations), visited a total of 3 classrooms each where teachers conducted 50-minute Math lessons. In some classrooms MINT participants were encouraged to get directly involved in an activity and/or talk with students. In other classrooms, MINT participants took on an observer role, documenting observations/evidence and suggestions on a specially designed recording chart geared towards the four key areas of need identified by HRHS staff. This recording chart was for observer notations and would be referenced later in the day when preparing for a formal debrief with HRHS staff.
Each small group of MINT participants had one open class period in the afternoon where they engaged in open discussion about classroom observations. Following these discussions, individual participants were given some “quiet time” providing them the opportunity to begin synthesizing their notes for debriefing preparation.
