MINT Support Team Visit
March 25
________________________________________________________________________
In preparation for the MINT support site visit and after a discussion of the February MINT visit at Mapleton Early College led by Rhonda Creed Harry (RCH), the Math Department (RCH, Phil Cordero and Richard Martin) in collaboration with the School Principal, Mary Rice-Booth and Diploma Plus School Coach, John Jenkins developed several key questions upon which the visiting team would be asked to base their observations and feedback. Each key question included information regarding the current practices observed at Harlem Renaissance and highlighted some of the concerns about each area in the school community.
KEY QUESTIONS
- How do we build a Culture of Success around Numeracy at HRHS?
- What routines/learning experiences within the HRHS Math Department help build skills and a culture of success in Numeracy?
- What are the current routines/learning experiences used in the Math classes that could help build skills and a culture of success in Numeracy across the school community?
- How is content vocabulary used to build skills and promote a culture of success in Numeracy within Math classes?
In addition to sharing the document mentioned above, HRHS staff and MINT support team members participated in three pre-site visit conference calls designed to create a culture of support and collaboration and allow MINT support team members to better understand the needs of HRHS staff. Emerging from the collaborative discussion on these calls, the primary areas of need for the MINT support team to focus their attention on were identified as: problem solving, student engagement, vocabulary/math literacy; and retention strategies.

In preparation for the MINT site visit, HRHS staff, with the support of Casey Jones, prepared a document citing evidence and steps taken since the March 25th Support Team Site Visit specifically related to the four key identified areas of need: problem solving, student engagement, vocabulary/math literacy; and retention strategies. This information was shared during the second of two pre-site visit conference calls. These calls, facilitated by the AHSI Math/QR leads and including MINT participants and HRHS staff were designed to create a culture of support and collaboration and allow MINT participants to better understand the needs of HRHS staff.
