College Career Fair Reaches 2,000 Students
The StreetSchool Network™ recently hosted the Transitions 2010 College & Career Expo, a free event with the purpose of connecting students, families, and adult learners with traditional and non-traditional education and career opportunities.
Over 2,000 students and community members attended the expo, which took place March 5th, 2010 from 9:00am to 9:00pm at the Denver Merchandise Mart in Denver, CO. The one day interactive and multifaceted college education and career event helped 9th-12th grade students, adult learners, and their families successfully navigate post-high school and/or career transitions.
Students in attendance were entered to win $50,000 in scholarships.
Special guests included Retired Denver Nugget Ervin Johnson, who spoke to students about the importance of education and hard work, as well as Jonny 5 and Brer Rabbit from the Flobots.
“There are so many ways young people can make a powerful and positive contribution to the world and there’s no “one path” that’s right for everyone. That’s why Flobots are excited to be part of the Transitions 2010 Expo, which is a kind of one-stop-shop of great information, ideas and inspiration for young people trying to figure out their next move after high school. I wish this kind of event was available when I was a high school student.” Jonny 5, MC, Flobots
The expo boasted of over 150 exhibitors including: public, state, and private universities, community and career colleges, occupational/vocational schools (i.e. art institutes, culinary schools, health and beauty academies), youth oriented non-profits, corporate training programs, and recruitment professionals.
The Transitions 2010 Expo also engaged students with education exhibits, preparation counseling, and career planning professionals. An Advising Hall offered participants personal assistance in areas such as admissions, scholarships, test prep and tutoring, financial aid, FAFSA, general finance planning, financial literacy, interest inventory and career assessment services, interviewing skills, health and safety, and presentations on topics such as “A Behind the Scenes Look at College Admissions Committees”. Students were able to have a unique experience by participating in hands-on booths sponsored by the US Army, Red Rocks Community College, and NASCAR Technical Institute.
